After a Car Accident

after a car accidentBAM!!! You were driving to work and minding your business, when all of a sudden your car is t-boned without warning and now your car is spinning in circles through an intersection.  It felt like someone just punched your entire body all at the same time.  This happened to me a few years ago while driving the Toyota Camry pictured above when another driver ran a red light.  Here are some tips to what you want to do after a car accident.

  1. Check for injuries – First of all, make sure everyone is okay and if there is any injuries of any kind regardless of the severity, call 911 so that an ambulance can be dispatched to the scene to see if anyone needs to be transported to a hospital.
  2. Take photos – Before moving any vehicles, I would recommend taking a few quick photos of the accident if it doesn’t pose an immediate safety risk based on the traffic in the area.  This will help in case people’s stories change in the days and weeks after an accident.
  3. Visit your doctor– If you are on the fence about whether or not you should see a medical professional about possible injuries, go ahead and go.  Even if you don’t need to take the ambulance and can go to the emergency clinic later in the day, it is better to err on the safe side because some injuries may not completely reveal themselves for a few days.
  4. Call the insurance company– If someone hits you and it’s clear that it was the other guy’s fault, you will want to contact their insurance company.  If you’re involved in a no-fault accident on your part, there is no need to file a claim with your insurance since they will not be paying anything out ($$$).  If you’re unsure who’s fault it is, call your insurance company to file a claim and they’ll walk you through the process.
